The Reading Process

Reading is a complex problem-solving process of integrating available information in order to make sense of the presented message.

The reading process begins with a prediction or hypothesis of what the text might say, how it will sound and what it will look like. Checking out the prediction or testing the hypothesis is the next step in the reading process. Finally, the process ends with a confirmation or rejection of the hypothesis or prediction. If confirmation is the result, the process continues on. If rejection occurs, then self-correction or an attempt to do so should occur.

Each step in the process is dependent on information available to the reader. This available information, which we will later refer to as reading cues, depends on the knowledge structure of the reader. It includes the reader's experiences and understanding of the world, knowledge of language structures, knowledge of how print works, and knowledge about letters and words.
